Karoonda Silo Art
Visit Australia’s first silo art display that can be experienced both day and night.
The Karoonda Silo Art combines a unique mix of large-scale mural for daytime viewing with colourful art projections that bring the giant grain silos to life at night.
Created by renowned Australian street artist Heesco, the painted mural celebrates Karoonda’s rural lifestyle, pristine environment and agricultural heritage.
By night, an ever-changing display of art from South Australian artists lights up the main street attraction. The projection artworks are continually changing, meaning there’s always something new to see.
Rain, hail or shine, the projection shows run all year, every evening from sunset for up to three hours.
In 2021 the Karoonda Silo Art won 1st prize (Gold) in the Mega Mural category at the Australian Street Art Awards, and also won the “Best of the Best” in the awards.
Paint by day
World-renowned and highly sought after street and mural artist Heesco created the stunning rural-themed silo mural.
It was the largest mural completed by the Melbourne artist at the time, and one he claimed as a “milestone in my personal career achievements”.
Painted during the winter months of June and July in 2019, Heesco had to battle wind and rain at times while creating the mammoth masterpiece.
Heesco’s brief was to incorporate community feedback into an artwork that encapsulates local Mallee life – both historic and contemporary. His work also had to act as a ‘frame’ to create space for the nightly projections.
Animals are a key feature of the mural – which stars locals Diamond the sheep and Whiskey the kelpie as representations of well-known local icons, the sheep and the trusted working dog.
Projection by night
Illuminated artwork provides an ever-changing giant digital canvas right in the heart of the Mallee. The evening display is a must-see and well worth staying the night in Karoonda to experience.
Created by projection art specialists Illuminart, the concept brings a new level of vibrancy and creativity to Karoonda’s main street every night. The projected digital display is programmed regularly with new art, providing multiple opportunities throughout the year for South Australian and Mallee visual artists to make a creative splash. The project is managed and curated by the District Council of Karoonda East Murray.
